Cardiology
What is Cardiology?
A cardiologist is a physician specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of heart and blood vessel conditions. They manage heart diseases and work to prevent their occurrence.
So what does a cardiologist do?
They specialize and are focused on treating conditions like chest pain, high blood pressure, heart failure, and issues with heart valves and blood vessels. They use various diagnostic tools, including electrocardiograms, echocardiograms, CT scans, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR), and nuclear imaging, to pinpoint problems. Based on their diagnosis, they might prescribe medications, suggest lifestyle changes, or perform procedures like cardiac catheterization. If surgery is needed, they'll refer you to a cardiothoracic surgeon.
In your consultation, a cardiologist will conduct a physical exam and discuss your symptoms, medical history, and family background. It’s essential to inform them about any heart conditions in your family, as this information can affect your risk assessment.
